Prof. Mahyudin Ritonga lahir di Desa Purba Tua, Sumatera Utara, pada 11 November 1982. Ia menyelesaikan pendidikan S1 di Fakultas Tarbiyah IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang, S2 di Universitas Negeri Padang, dan S3 di Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
